Celebrating hardships is celebrating life, and this is Rann Utsav is all about. Rann means desert was the most backward area of Gujarat, the source of anxiety and fear. It can be divided into greater Rann with an area of 7505.22sq. Km and little Rann with an area of 4953 km.
It mostly has the preponderant Muslim population. Famous for wildlife sanctuary and flamingos is marshy primarily during monsoon and great white in Winters. It holds the privilege of being largest salt desert
The Rann Utsav under the tutelage of vibrant Gujarat was the brainchild of our honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Started in 2006 it celebrates the mystical magic of Kutch and its diversity. A Carnival of music dance and culture of Gujarat is the 3-month long festival. It starts in November and continues until March.
Sprawling across an area of 500000 square meters the temporary dwellings (tents) capture the ethnic beauty of Kutch. It is supposed to be the most extensive tent accommodation in India. It takes more than two months to set up this luxurious panorama.
Temporary dwellings or tent city are arranged in C-shaped clusters. It also includes two separate dining halls, at the reception area, conference Hall, clubhouse, cafe and rejuvenation centre. Handicraft Bazaar is also there providing an opportunity for the locals to showcase there work. The activity area is used for performances and entertaining shows.
Activities at Rann of Kutch Utsav
- Rendezvous with the moon: under the moonlit sky the white desert looks like a dream. It is the time to step out from your tent and experience the Mystic beauty of nature.
- Witness the cultural extravaganza of Gujarat: Utsav gives the opportunity to an outstanding folk artist from all over India to showcase their extraordinary talent.
- Adventure sports: visitor here can also go solo on DPV(desert petrol ride) or have an overhead view of the desert through paramotoring. One can also experience balloon ride does travelling back in time. Other activities include shooting, archery, indoor games.
Gujarat Tourism offers different tour packages during the festival:
Saurashtra Darshan: This is 4-day tour which includes Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Dwarka, Bhet Dwarka, Somnath, Sasan Gir and Junagadh.
Sizzling Kutch: A 8-day tour starting from Ahmedabad includes little Rann of Kutch, Bhuj, Hodka, Banni, Pachcham region, Mandvi, Anjar, Rajkot and Akshardham.
- It provides the opportunity to explore the desert in open jeep where one can see animals like the wild ass, desert fox, blue bull, blackbuck etc. In this package, one gets the privilege of staying in traditional Bhungas (mud houses) or Eco Tents.
Wildlife and Beach Package: This 5-day tour covers Ahmedabad little Rann of Kutch Mandvi Beach and Wankaner Palace.
Desert and Beach Tour: 5-day tour starts from Bhuj including Hodka village, Nakhtrana village, Bunni, and Pachcham region and Mandvi Beach.
Spectacular South Gujarat: It is a 7-day tour starting from Ahmedabad to Daman Silvassa and Saputara.
Ultimate Gujarat: A 9 day tour including Ahmedabad, little Rann of Kutch, Jamnagar, Dwarka, Porbandar, Somnath, Diu, Sasan Gir, Junagadh, Gondal, Palitana, Bhavnagar, velavadar National Park and Lothal.
This year the Rann Utsav have started from November 1st, 2017 and will continue till 20th Feb 2018.
